Vilas County’s newest periodical is hot off the presses! The Tikvah Chatter, with articles written, published, and circulated by campers in our Tikvah program is an opportunity to share our experiences in Tikvah with the broader Camp Ramah community.

Though we had some brainstorming help from our chaverim in the Machon eidah, all compositions have been crafted independently by the specified authors. Some chose to share about a favorite part of their week, while others wrote about a special one-time camp event. All of our Tikvah campers engage in some level of inclusion with eidot (age groups) and anafim (specialties/hobbies) around camp, and some wrote about their involvement in a new area of camp, outside of Tikvah.

The opinions expressed in the articles below belong solely to the authors, and do not necessarily reflect the official policies of Jared Skoff, Freddie Mercury, or the Camp Ramah in Wisconsin organization. Please enjoy our first digital release of the Tikvah Chatter – our columnists hope to publish again soon.

July 4th Carnival by Milly Costa
One highlight this summer was the 4th of July. I loved the games – the ring toss and bean bag toss. The weather was very nice. I won the Oreo raffle because I guessed 50 and I was right so I won a bag of 10 Oreos. I almost won the watermelon-eating contest but the watermelon came out of my mouth so I did not win. After the carnival I did the color run and people threw paint powder at me. After, I went into the foam bubbles and then into the lake. I had a lot of fun.

On Fridays we make cholent for Shabbat kiddush as a group in the morning. Jared likes to peel the sweet potatoes and potatoes. But I would leave the peel on them both, because I think that leaving the peel on might give it more flavor and it saves time. But the cholent is still good every single week.

Polar Bear Swim at 5:30 AM by Lily Agbodza I swam in the agam to the island. Ofir swam with me. I went on a boat to the Island. It was fun that I swam back. I drank hot chocolate. I like to swim laps with my friends. I go with Milly and Shayna.

Yom Sport is pretty cool because even when you’re not playing you’re still rooting for your friends to do well – you can’t win Yom Sport by yourself. My favorite part is the championship games of basketball and soccer. I like this part because whether you’re playing or not, everyone on your team is rooting for their teammates to win. I was on team Tzahov and even though my team didn’t win, I still had a great time.

I sang Bohemian Rhapsody with Atzmayim when we had karaoke night for peulat erev. It was fun! I also love the movie Bohemian Rhapsody because I am a Queen fan. I love hanging out with Atzmayim when we have peulat erev together because I get to hang out with my old friends from the past 2 summers.

Nivonim Canoe Trip by Liel Huppert
I was in Tikvah and this summer I have completely moved in with Nivo. This last Thursday we got back from our three day canoe trip. This was a huge challenge for me. But I braved through it even though I got very wet. Something I’m very proud of myself for is that I did not capsize, and the most shocking thing of all, I was calm during everything. I was able to smile through it all, singing and cheering others on. On the last day, my partner and I went first on the biggest rapids we crossed, and I will never stop wondering how I managed it. It rained so much that we couldn’t build fires, but we made do by making deconstructed s’mores. I will never regret going on this journey, and I hope future Nivonimers have as much fun as I did. Thank you!
