We are thrilled to re-introduce you to our returning Rosh Agam (Waterfront Head), Deena Cowans. Deena is finishing up her junior year at Duke and spent the fall in Madrid on a study abroad program. She loved traveling around Europe and is particularly proud of the National Champion Blue Devils men's basketball team! Deena swam and played varsity water polo throughout high school in suburban Chicago and was on the swim team at Duke for her first two years. She also spent a number of years coaching swimming for the Special Olympics. In her spare time – when she’s not serving as the newly elected President of Hillel at Duke and a top notch student – Deena is training to run a half-marathon in May and a full one in October. For those muggles out there, Deena is writing her honors thesis on “Harry Potter Fans” and personally challenges everyone in camp to a trivia contest on all things penned by J.K. Rowling.
Deena has been working all year on a new swimming curriculum for the waterfront and is eager to lead "a very enthusiastic, fun staff and offer lots of new programming and class ideas to insure that this is the best summer the waterfront has seen in recent memory." The new curriculum will focus on swim classes that are lots of fun and help campers improve their swimming skills. Deena is also working on a bunch of surprise electives for Machon 2010. Each eidah can expect new fun this summer on the waterfront, including an improved synchronized swimming regimen for Bogrim!
This summer, Deena looks forward to spending another wonderful year at Ramah with her younger sister and brother. She misses the wonderful connections she was able to create as an all-star madricha miktzo'it for Garinim and Chalutzim in 2007 and 2008 and is always happy to hang out with campers on the Kikar or by the Agam.
Welcome Deena!
