Each summer Shoafim campers learn about the mitzvah of tzedakah and the importance of supporting local, national and worldwide organizations. This past summer, they sold Shabbat-o-grams, held raffles for prime seats at plays, washed cars, and sold snacks, just to name a few of their tzedakah projects. By the end of the summer they had raised $1,730.00! They learned about organizations in need of support and together decided how to allocate the funds.
Here's what some of the organizations that received Shoafim 2010's tzedakah money had to say:
"Please thank your 8th grade campers for choosing us–we really appreciate it!" –Alice B. Parkerson of Greater New Orleans Foundation, Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund
"The only way to measure the gratitude of your generous donation is in the smiles and joy of our Chai Lifeline kids…I know you are very proud, as we are, of your exceptional campers who worked passionately and diligently to collect these funds." –Rabbi Shlomo Crandall of Chai Lifeline
"Thank you for your tzedakah fundraising efforts. I am especially gratified and honored that you have donated to MAZON…By giving through MAZON, you truly change the lives of others who are less fortunate. Your giving has a powerful impact." –Barbara H. Bergen of MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger
