שהגעתי נדהמתי מהיופי של המחנה. הכרתי אנשים חדשים, תרבויות שונות , וכולנו במחנה אחד בויסקונסין. התחלקנו לעדות והתחלנו להכיר ולהתגבש כצוות. ואז הגיע היום שבו החניכים הגיעו. לא אשכח את ההתרגשות שהיתה לי בגוף כשחיכינו בחנייה לאוטובוסים של החניכים. כולם לבשו חולצות צוות הריעו לכל חניך וחניך שירד מהאוטובוס ושם בעצם התחיל הקיץ האמיתי. החניכים הפכו את המחנה לחי.
בתפקיד שלי כמדריכת חבלים יצא לי לגעת בכל המחנה בערך. בכל יום היתה מגיעה אלינו קבוצה בין אם זה חניכים בין אם זה משפחות של חניכים ובין אם זה חברי צוות במחנה שהגיעו ליום כיף. החוויה בחבלים בכל יום הייתה שונה.
אז איך יום בחבלים נראה? במהלך הקיץ היינו 5 חברי צוות ובכל יום היתה חלוקה. לפני ההגעה לחבלים הגבוהים 2 מאיתנו היו מעבירים חבלים נמוכים והשאר היו הולכים להקים את החבלים הגבוהים וממתינים שהקבוצה תגיע ביחד עם המדריכים. יצא לי להתמודד עם הרבה סיטואציות בהם חניכים ואף מדריכים ממש חששו מהטיפוס על המתקנים אבל לאחר שיכנוע קטן מצידי הסכימו להתמודד עם הפחד ואף להנות. בדרך הזו יצא לי לגעת בהרבה אנשים , מה שגרם לקשרים בשגרה היום יומית של המחנה.
כמישהי שלמדה בבתי ספר דתיים לא היתה לי באמת בעיה להתפלל .. רק שכאן מדובר בקהילה קונסרבטיבית והתפילות הן נורא שונות. מצאתי את עצמי שרה את התפילה בלחנים שמעולם לא שמעתי , אך מהר מאוד נתפסו לי בראש .מצאתי את עצמי מוקפת בבנות שמניחות תפילין חובשות כיפה ועולות לתורה. כן היה קצת קשה לעכל בהתחלה אבל זה באמת נתן לי להפתח לדעות שונות וזרמים שונים ביהדות. הכרתי כאן מסורות שנמשכות לאורך שנים עוד הרבה לפני שנולדתי מה שהיה כל כך יפה בעיניי. פלאקים , שירים, מופעים ועוד. אין ספק שהמחנה הוא מקום קסום וטוב מלא באווירה מיוחדת שזר לא יבין.
On the day I arrived I was amazed at the beauty of the camp, and it was cool to meet new people from different cultures. Here we were – all in one camp in Wisconsin. During staff week we got to know each other and started to work as a team. Then came the day when the campers arrived. I will not forget the excitement as we waited in the parking lot for the buses to arrive. We all wore our staff shirts and cheered every single camper who got off the buses. I felt like that was when the summer actually started – the campers made the camp come alive!
In my role as a ropes course counselor, I interacted with the whole camp. Every day a different cabin or group would come to us, excited for a fun day. And this made every day interesting and different.
So what’s a day on the ropes course like? Each group first does a series of challenges and teamwork exercises on the low ropes course. Then the group arrives at the high ropes course and the five members of our staff guide the group through a series of adventurous activities. There were times when campers and counselors were afraid to climb the structures, but after a little persuasion on my part they agreed to try it and they even enjoyed it. Through these daily activities I interacted with a lot of people, connecting through the daily routine of the camp.
As someone who studied in religious schools in Israel, I didn’t have a problem with the prayer services at camp. But praying in a Conservative community was new to me. I found myself singing melodies that I had never heard before, but quickly became familiar. I saw girls and women who put on tefillin, wore kipot, and read from the Torah. It was a little hard for me at first, but it really allowed me to open up to different ways of expressing Judaism. I also enjoyed learning camp traditions that were started before I was born, which were so beautiful to me like the play plaques, camp songs, Hebrew musicals and more. Without a doubt, Camp Ramah is a magical place filled with a special atmosphere that’s hard to put into words!
