by Libby Collins, Student Nurse, Marp Staff 2017On July 12th, Camp Ramah held its first Red Cross blood drive. Co-head Nurse Elisa Pener had the wonderful idea to hold a drive at camp, and asked me to coordinate. I worked with the staff at the Red Cross to set a date, approve the site, and evaluate donor interest. With the help of Rachel Zeman, Staff Programmer, we recruited over 50 staff for the drive! By the end of the day on July 12th, we collected blood from 41 staff members, which calculates out to enough blood to save about 132 lives. To give a little perspective, the Red Cross considers about 30 donors to be a successful drive and we surpassed that on our very first try. I am extremely grateful to all of the staff at Ramah who came to donate and to those who volunteered, as well as Rachel Zeman who promoted the drive so perfectly. This drive was an excellent way to give back to the community, and I hope that we can make the Camp Ramah Blood Drive an annual event!
